I was a woeful listener too until I had to interview people for my job without a set list of questions. People tell you very quickly if you've heard them wrong in an interview!
Inspiring, Michael! Iβm reminded of this scene from βAdaptationββ¦ Even though itβs intended to have an element of tongue-in-cheek to it, I suspect the sentimentβs sincere: https://youtu.be/x90GleSXqIg?si=S2HK03ZvYQluCuOW
I need to revisit that film. Nearly crossed paths with Charlie Kaufman in the late 1970s (weβre about the same age) as he worked in the Circulation dept of the Minneapolis Star and Tribune (as it was called then, a morning and evening paper, now combined as Minnesota StarTribune) and I worked Circulation in 1979 but I think heβd split to CA by then. Weird.
"Kaufman lived in Minneapolis during the late 1980s, working in the Star Tribune circulation department for four-and-a-half years. "I would take missed-newspaper calls at 5 in the morning. It was a hard job, especially in the winter. I'd get up at 4 and take the bus downtown. It was freezing and everybody looked really sad on the bus." from:
Actually I got it wrong, Charlie is now 66 and I'm a year younger. So I was at the Strib in 1979 and he was there later in the '80s, then he went to LA in the '90s.
The Twin Cities has gotten incredibly sad(der). I try to refrain from using terms like βstreet gargoylesβ and such, but truth is, itβs a shitshow.
The cool thing Charlie does is find humor and light in darkness. Heβs masterful.

They certainly will! Thanks for stopping by, Ellen.

Whaaaaaat? Fascinating! What are the chances of thatβ¦! π€― I should revisit the film again as well, itβs been a minute.

I love that observation, everyone looking sad on the bus. You canβt turn the observer/writer off π

Yes! Helps to stay sane. π Certainly an inspiration for me, too, Michael!
