Oops, I feel like I'm intruding! I was born in the British Isles, lived for some years in the Canary Islands, then on Hong Kong Island, and now I'm on the main island of Japan. I love islands...π
I agree with the port of call metaphor ... a place like the medieval mid east where many cultures cross paths. I've never used Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any of the thousands of knockoffs, just the old blogs. I also haven't watched a TV show or listened to radio in decades.
And the one thing that makes Substack stand out is ...
NO ADVERTISEMENTS
No homogenized content ultimately controlled by corporate advertising dollars is worth a lot to me.
I like the port-of-call metaphor! And I must say I've mostly not been very active on Notes because it's yet another platform to manage. I still have to do Twitter and LinkedIn for work, and I've stayed on Facebook for certain groups and to stay in touch with distant friends and relatives. All of that already feels like too much!
That's what I thought! However, Notes is a part of Substack, so it's been a great way to introduce my work to new subscriber/readers. I can't go back to FB, X or IG. :-/
I like your "port-of-call" metaphor, Michael. So many people come and go. So many interesting writers here - yourself very much included. I think I'll stay for a bit longer.
We are not islanders...
No ma'am. Not in the least.

Arthur C. Clarkeβs Dolphin Island was a favorite when I was a preteen!

I'm sure that Notes is far better than all of those β and I certainly hope it remains that way!

Love the Tumbleweed Connection reference. π
"I took myself a bluuuuuue canoe..." lol.
To an island? Not. π
NO ISLANDING. Sans islands.
